Skin Course: Basic Skincare

Hey, beautiful!

This week we'll be talking a little skin course... So, today we’re going to talk about the basic cares your skin needs; what your beauty regimen should be based on and which ingredients to avoid.

Taking care of your skin is the most important thing you can incorporate into your beauty regimen. If you don’t take proper care of your skin, you could potentially get serious problems that you can avoid just by showing your skin a little love.

First of all, you have to find the right skin-care regimen for you and stick with it. This can take some time while you test different products and see what works for your skin type.

*Basic skin-care advice: once you’ve picked a set of products to try, you can use these basic at-home skin-care rules.

1. Exfoliating.
2. Cleansing.

3. Toning.
4. Moisturizing.

*Ingredients to avoid: one good indicator that a product isn't good for you? A lengthy string of words you can’t pronounce. Here’s a list of those to avoid:

1. Fragrance.

2. Phthalates: these commonly go by dibutyl phthalate (DBP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP).

3. Diethanolamine: used in cosmetics to create a foaming effect.

4. Coal-Tar colors and dyes: proven to be carcinogenic and many are banned. FD&C or D&C are still in use pass safety tests. And according to guidelines, don’t apply any product labeled Ext D&C near your eyes or on your lips.

5. Formaldehyde: a known carcinogen. Some ingredients in mascara break down and become this, which is why you should replace your mascara every few months.

6. Aluminum: known to be absorbed by the skin and behave like estrogen (which can foster cancer-cell growth).

7. Parabens: often preceded by methyl-, ethyl-, butyl- or propyl- and are used to make products last longer. These days it’s pretty easy to find paraben-free products.

Now that you know this, I hope the next time you go shopping you have these tips on hand and look carefully at those labels.

Bye, beautiful!
